Thursday Open Thread: Mark Leno on Prop 8

? assemblyman (soon to be senator) mark leno takes on a liberty directors wingnut on marriage equality. and i think you’ll agree with me that the assemblyman is the winner here.

? Asm. Dave Jones announced that he’ll seek the post of insurance commissioner, the one statewide office that the Republicans currently hold. Good, we need somebody who’s focused on that position, and not posturing for the Republican primary. Jones is a smart guy, and would do a good job. It will be interesting to see if there are others angling for the gig.

? George Skelton sees a mandate in a 4 tenths point victory for Prop 11. You know, I just can’t beat my head against this wall any more. The so-called reformers have no, I repeat ZERO, evidence that this will make any additional districts competitive. If this wins, perhaps one or two more districts become competitive, but the underlying demographics do not bear this out. Skelton claims he wants “geographically logical and competitive districts”. Well guess what, I want my tree to give me lumber and apples. (Read the Giving Tree). You have one, or you have the other.

In California, we have self-sorted along political lines. Add that to the fact that California is trending toward greater control for the majority party, and you don’t have the recipe for a lot of newly competive seats, save the regions where the GOP seats are already trending Dem.

And crowned with his big success of helping Prop 11 to victory, he’s already pumping up the big Washington state style “Top 2″ election, as if that will somehow be terrific. Great more opportunities for moneyed interests to dominate.

Listen, George, you want real reform? It’s called Clean Money. That’s the REAL reform that we need.

Night court movie

? Do Republicans even bother with lipservice to representative democracy anymore? Or are we totally over that in favor of putting everything to the ballot. Or perhaps better defined, they are just simply obsessed with the government employees unions. Why must the OC voters now approve government employee contracts? Because the Republicans are all about a new PR stunt to go after dedicated civil servants. Sad.

? I don’t know what to make of this, but a senior aide to Barbara Boxer is facing child pornography charges. Jeff Rosato has been fired.

? AmericaBlog has a scalp to show for its efforts to pressure Yes on Prop 8 donors. Scott Eckern, a Mormon who donated to Yes on 8, resigned today from the Sacramento based California Musical Theater.

UPDATE by Robert: Major fire breaks out in Santa Barbara - threatening Westmont College and cutting power to most of downtown. These unseasonably warm November temperatures do have their cost.

A Buttercream Weekend - In Need Of Fruit!

Honey And Lavender Opera

update 1: for a first account of the weekend, read john’s post here.update 2: sorry on account of the confusion but this was not the wedding cake, i was just dipping into the archives to illustrate the buttercream.as you can see i am using a pygmy release in the archives to calculate up the last 5 days spent at lisa’s over the extent of her wedding. there was a lot of buttercream indeed, a minor over 6 pounds of it absolutely since her wedding cake. i am in any case at her enterprise and won’t be back until later tonight but i will run some curious-interesting numbers towards you later in the week. the food was beyond good, the people and friends i met were unqualifiedly fantastic and cool though there were quite a few nights that led to a 5am bed time, when we finally sat down this afternoon there was a huge smile on everybody’s face a couple of miles long. i procure so many stories and memories that it is all a big happy blur in my head dexter right now and as soon as i download and go during all the pictures tomorrow, i will make sure to give you an idea of what an astounding trip it was.i thought that a little voyage into opera land with a earlier daring bakers challenge that i loved will give you a tasty tease of more creamy pictures to come…not to mention that the legs in the notion above look nothing like quarry after prepping and dancing all night long (was it the vodka or the shoes…who knows?!!). i missed b. and the pupps and now that the festivities are over, my league tired and my heart filled, i am seriously craving a little detox. i know verbatim what to select on tuesday morning to fix this: apricot and lavender panna cottas! i froze a bunch of apricots over the summer but i believe good quality preserved ones can do in a pinch.

Escape from a madman

Lavender and Apricot Panna Cotta

why i am still awake you weight ask? overdrive…pure and lowly and so happy about it at the same time!! the topper? meeting john and r. who came from pittsburg to be at lisa’s party and spending 5 awesome days with kelly who flew back to san diego sunday afternoon. more on all of this later…

Obama: “Change Has Come to America”

With the election of Barack Obama, the United States and the world expect a new direction in the fight against climate change. The choice of Senator Obama - an African-American born in Hawaii, schooled in Indonesia and the United States, and seasoned while fighting for tenant’s rights in Chicago’s South Side - reflects the diversity that defines America. But it was his well-reasoned approach to policy and messages of hope that won voters - qualities that many say the U.S. government abandoned during George W. Bush’s tumultuous administration. The same values that earned Obama keys to the White House are vital to address the most challenging threats to global sustainability. An international climate change agreement will rely upon American leadership, and the many issues such a treaty involves - population growth, resource depletion, economic disparity - call for international problem-solving and a worldwide commitment to change.

Environmental leaders in the United States and abroad quickly suggested that the election reflected the American people’s desire to reverse President Bush’s damaging climate change policies. “Today’s landslide election of Barack Obama and pro-environment candidates across the country signals a strong rejection of the failed energy policies of the last eight years and a historic mandate for large-scale, transformational change,” said Brent Blackwelder, president of Friends of the Earth - U.S.Yet it was the economy that overwhelmingly dominated voters’ minds. More than 60 percent said it was their most important issue, according to exit polls. “Except for younger voters, I’m not sure the environment played such a big role,” said Riley Dunlap, an environmental sociologist at Oklahoma State University. Although climate change was rarely a major campaign issue - questions of carbon reduction levels or renewable energy policies were sparsely debated - several energy policy issues became constant components of campaign speeches. Republican candidate John McCain advocated offshore drilling and nuclear power as paths toward energy independence. Obama, a Democrat, countered with a $150 billion plan to support energy efficiency and renewable energy. While climate change may not have dominated voters’ decisions, Obama’s comprehensive energy strategies likely influenced his image as an agent of change. “There’s every reason to suggest Obama’s commitment to energy policy, renewable energy, and conservation was an asset,” Dunlap said.Aside from the presidential election, voters broadly supported Congressional candidates who advocated greater action on climate change. Among the Democratic Party’s gains in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, at least 92 of the 116 candidates endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) were victorious. “With strong new leaders like these, we expect to pass significant global warming and clean energy legislation in the next year,” said Gene Karpinski, president of the LCV, an environmental group that campaigns for politicians with the best environmental track record. With Democratic control of the White House and Congress, policies such as a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, a federal renewable energy portfolio standard, higher fuel efficiency standards, national energy-efficient building codes, and a long-term extension of renewable energy tax credits are all likely. The election, in combination with a slight rise in oil prices, is already affecting the alternative energy market. The Guardian reported that stock values jumped 30 percent for Solar Integrated Technologies, 22 percent for Renewable Energy Corporation, and 16 percent for wind turbine manufacturer Vestas. “With an administration recognizing how important [renewable energy] is, I think that the level of investment both domestically and around the world will go up exponentially in the next few years, just because it

Jerusalem: Holy Brawl: Christian Monks Duke it Out at Jerusalem Holy Site

When it comes to Jerusalem, you hear a lot about the tension between people of the Jewish and Muslim faiths, but not so much about the Christians, who also consider it a sacred city. A recent scuffle at one of the holiest spots in all of Christendom, however, reminds us that they’re a fragmented people as well, with plenty of long-standing beefs among the various sects. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher - a Christian church located within the walled city of Jerusalem on what is believed to be the spot of Christ’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection - was the setting for a violent clash between groups of Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks this morning. As with most religious disputes, what they were fighting over is kind of complicated and goes back a long, long way, but apparently the Armenians were holding a ceremony and the Greeks felt that one of their monks had the right to be present, lest they lose their claim to a structure built on Christ’s tomb. The Armenians refused to allow a Greek monk to join the ceremony, so the Greeks tried to block the procession, and that’s when multiple blows were exchanged (see the BBC video) and Israeli cops rushed in and arrested one monk from each side. We’re not about to diagnose the problems of the world in one blog posting, but aren’t monks supposed to be loving and non-violent? In any case, the church is usually a peaceful place, and it is open to visitors of all faiths. So stop by if you’re in town, and if arguments arise between believers, stay neutral and slowly back away.
